We believe strongly in continuing education!

Do you remember when you first started to pay attention to your skin?

Everyone remembers those frustrating mornings as a teenager, when no matter what you tried, you’d find your skin misbehaving. With so many influencing factors, sometimes advice from friends and family wasn’t always relevant, leaving you to soldier on the best you could.

Many of us continue this trial-and-error method of skin care well into adulthood, without taking the time to understand the underlying influences of any particular concerns. However, it’s never too late to put your skin first by visiting a Reveal Skin Expert, trained to identify and address a range of issues.

Skin Experts who work with Reveal Skin & Body are all highly qualified skin professionals, having undertaken in-depth training on the science of skin to be able to deliver real results. On top of their qualifications, our Skin Expert technicians have specialized training in IPL, DermaPen and LED Light Therapy. Each Expert also undertakes 20-30 hours of additional training per year. We like to highlight their training with their certificates showcased on our walls. Don’t hesitate to ask your skin care therapist about her background, training, and experience—especially as it relates to the treatment you are considering.

With our Skin Expert’s in-depth training we recommend a consultation so that they can spend time getting to know your specific skin needs and concerns and recommend the exact line up of treatments and products for all your skin care needs!  The perfect mix of in-spa treatments and home care products can equal real noticeable results that help you love your skin.
Lastly don’t forget that your skin is you largest and most exposed organ. Don’t forget to invest in it!

The Benefits of a Winter Facial

winter skin rescue facial papamoa beach

Winter is traditionally a time when we hunker down, stay in, and snuggle up in something comfy. Feet stay resolutely hidden inside boots and slippers, and there are fewer opportunities to flash those perfectly waxed legs. However, there are many benefits to slipping down to your beauty salon for a winter facial treatment which will not only leave you looking beautiful, but feeling great too.

Despite the lack of sunshine, our skin receives no reprieve from the harsh UV rays over winter. This coupled with the drying effect of wind and the lack of humidity in the air can leave your skin irritated, scaly and sallow.

A facial works to counteract these effects in three ways: by improving circulation, by providing deep cleansing, and by restoring moisture and hydration.

At the outset, it is important for your beauty therapist to do a thorough skin analysis and consultation. Our skin changes as we age, as hormones fluctuate, and as the seasons change. It is important that the right products are selected in order to ensure a beautiful result.

The reason we want to improve circulation to our face is to stimulate our own skin’s natural renewal, leaving a complexion which looks younger and feels smoother. This stimulation can take the form of exfoliants, masks or peels which removes the dead skin cells to reveal the new skin cells underneath. Exfoliation also allows for ingredients to absorb more deeply into your skin, maximising the benefits.

Winter is also the perfect time to get into some fabulous peel treatments. From peels that you have done in your lunch hour through to treatment mask peels that are left on for 6 or more hours these all benefit different levels to give your skin deep exfoliation and stimulation that minimalizes fine lines, helps with pigmentation and smooth tone texture and can ultimately slow down the aging process

Deep cleansing is important for all skin types, but particularly those prone to blemishes. A facial includes cleansing which helps unblock your pores and promotes healing and restoration. Our daily cleansing regime might be adequate for makeup and grime removal but for skin that is truly clean, a facial gives an unsurpassed result.

Finally, the skin is nourished with a moisturiser matched to your skin type. In general, in winter we require more moisture and protection, which means we need to remain vigilant with our sun protection, in all four seasons.

Of course, forgetting about all the technical jargon for a moment and remember about one of the ultimate health benefits of a facial, and that is the deep relaxation, stress relief and inner warmth which come from taking time out to nurture ourselves. We have developed a tailored facial just for winter skin, book in today to add back in what winter takes out.

Winter Skin Rescue

A thorough cleanse followed by an exfoliating microdermabrasion to slough away the dead skin that winter air and heating build up, then an LED treatment to give your cells a 'full tank of fuel' to boost production of  collagen and elastin like in your 20s, while your skin is alert we add back in much needed hydration with a Ginger & Me hydrating mask and finished up with aftercare and SPF specific to your skin type.

The fascinating connection between your mind and skin

skin mind connection destress with ginger and me mindfulness facial at Reveal skin and body

Our skin can often reflect other aspects of our wellbeing, from diet, to pollution and even stress. However, could yours be trying to tell you something about your emotional health?

That itchy rash or annoying breakout may be a sign that your skin is also fed up with whatever is stressing you out. Irritated skin usually sends people running to the chemist for quick relief, but a rising trend has some heading to dermatologists who specialise in psychodermatology.

Are the brain and skin really linked?

The field of psychodermatology examines this fascinating connection, and how by addressing mental barriers and issues, we can potentially help to improve our skin. In our hectic, modern world, our skin flaring up could be yet another reminder to slow down, breathe and appreciate life, principles encouraged in yoga and meditation, as well as mindfulness.

While the effect of emotions on our skin isn't perhaps a new discovery, it remains something that is a challenge for many to grasp as a concept.

"How amazing is it that a simple cognition can cause virtually every blood vessel in the skin to instantaneously open up, causing a blush or flush?" said Dr Rick Fried, a psychologist and dermatologist from Yardley Dermatology Associates. "That's pretty amazing evidence that the mind and body are linked."

From acne breakouts, to rosacea flushes to eczema flare-ups, stress is the fuel to the fire of inflammation lurking in these conditions.

Stress is more than skin deep

Imagine any of these scenarios: back-to-back exams, a messy divorce, unexpected health issues, even being stuck in traffic when you’re already late. Does the mere thought of these send stress signals down your spine?  It doesn’t take scientific evidence for us to realize that the kind of stress driving us to the nearest pub — or reaching for the bowl of chocolate-covered nuts — isn’t good for our skin (and neither are those coping choices!). But the effects of psychological stress on our skin may be more serious than we realize. Scientific evidence has shown us that stress equates to inflammation, and this can cause havoc on the skin. From acne breakouts, to rosacea flushes to eczema flare-ups, stress is the fuel to the fire of inflammation lurking in these conditions. What’s more, stress not only triggers or exacerbates particular skin diseases, it can also lead to dehydration, lines, blotchiness, hair loss and brittle nails for those without an inherent condition.

On the flip-side, the distress these stress-related skin conditions causes is also very real, feeding a vicious cycle. Getting that awful pimple before your date, or the significant hair loss after a traumatic event — these can in turn cause psychological distress, even to the point of creating a psychiatric condition such as depression and anxiety. The statistics are telling: people with the most visible skin conditions (vitiligo, psoriasis) have much higher risk factor for developing anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts.

A mind body approach

In a world-first, GINGER&ME In-Clinic (Spa) treatments are designed to treat the skin and mind simultaneously in the knowledge that beauty comes from more than just a healthy skin but also a healthy mind. In this crazy, busy world, skin is subjected to more than just physical skin stressors. New age stressors including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, time poor, use of mobile phones and lack of sleep are all triggers for inflammatory responses leading not just to problematic skin but to poor skin health too.

With this in mind, the in-clinic only GINGER&ME Neurocosmedics Mindfulness Sessions were created to support healthy skin and empower a healthy mind. A skin treatment combined with a guided POWER-TUDE Mindfulness Session where guests can put on their GINGER&ME Headsets, forget the noise of the outside world and focus on a mindfulness journey that will calm, refresh and ultimately inspire them to ‘choose their TUDE’ and never forget “they are worth it”.

The concept covers three key points: Skin, Mind and Power-Tude.

Skin: The acknowledgment that the skin is the largest organ in the body and deserves the utmost attention for its preservation. The blessing that modern day, high-tech actives used in skin care (when used in their functional dose) can trigger a physiological difference and support skin health and cellular behaviour.

Mind: The realisation that modern living; the fast-paced world we live in, juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, the pressure of social media (the list does not end here) is challenging our mental health. The fact that whilst we may be physically present in a moment; mentally we are not. Mindfulness gives the opportunity to stop and pay full attention, to observe your thoughts, feelings, the sensations of taste, touch, smell, sight and sound and to be fully aware of your surroundings.

Power-Tude: The power of being aware of your personal needs and nurturing them, fitting your oxygen mask first so you are better equipped to helps others. The strength of inner-peace; that allows you to be in control of your behaviours, reactions and actions.

The opportunity to choose your TUDE; your attitude, your altitude, your level of gratitude and ultimately your beauty-tude; putting you in life’s driver’s seat, taking the controls so that you may be the best version of you, making the most of life’s blessings.

Clarify | The Truth About Adult Acne

Breakouts. We’ve all had them as teenagers, and often feel that by the time we reach our 20’s, we’ve done our time suffering and have earned clear blemish-free skin. However, for many people, adult acne is a real issue that might flare up even if you never suffered with it as a teenager.

Acne is caused by fluctuations in a person’s hormone levels that result in overproduction of oil in the skin. The excess oil combines with dead skin cells and blocks hair follicles on the face, creating a plug known as a comedone.

Closed comedones appear white, while open comedones oxidise when in contact with the air and appear black (known as ‘blackheads’).

How can I treat adult acne?

To properly treat adult acne, it’s important to take a 360-degree look at your diet and lifestyle as well as making sure you have the best skin care products and treatments to effectively treat your skin.

Lifestyle factors such a stress (which affects the activity of your hormones) and exposure to pollution (which can clog pores) can exacerbate the development of acne. A high GI (high sugar) diet has also been associated with acne, and some studies suggest dairy consumption could play a role.

You should also avoid oil-based cosmetics which could clog the pores further – look out for non-comedogenic formulas.

What products are suitable for people with adult acne?

Ultraceutical’s Ultra Clear Range is a lightweight formula that works to defend against acne by targeting it at each of the four stages in the development cycle. It does this by actively addressing excess sebum production, as well as exfoliating clogged pores.

Our Ultra Clear Range contains Mandelic and Salicylic Acid plus Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) that to help unclog pores and has anti-irritant and anti-bacterial benefits. We also use Clove Oil in the formulas for its antioxidant properties.

The acne development cycle is 3 months – so to get the best results you have to be committed. A great first step on the road to treating your acne is to book a skin consultation to allow a qualified skin therapist to thoroughly examine your skin and decide on an action plan.

Brighten | Dealing with Hyperpigmentation & Age Spots

clearing pigmentation and age spots

You’re not alone if your skin features dark spots, skin discolouration, blotchiness, freckles or melasma as all are common skin concerns collectively known as hyperpigmentation. But what nature gives us nature can also take away with an exciting array of potent plant extracts that visibly fade the appearance of hyperpigmentation and enhance skin luminosity.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Usually harmless, this darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin — often clustering in a disorderly way to form patchy skin tone or dark spots.

Here to save the day, highly effective plant-derived melanin inhibitors have been tested and proven to be effective in fading the appearance of hyperpigmentation by disrupting production and activity of the enzyme tyrosinase — the main enzyme within melanin cells responsible for the production of pigment and our arch nemesis in hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation seems like a stubborn problem. Is there really a solution?
Correct, hyperpigmentation has a reputation for being difficult to treat. This is why it helps to have professional advice and a number of different approaches. Our Skin Journey Consultation is a great place to start. We can customise a combination of treatments and home care to tackle the problem.

For our home care, we offer Ultraceuticals, an award-winning range of skincare with multi-action ingredients to brighten and clarify hyperpigmented skin. We also offer several services such as masks, peels, microdermabrasion, IPL Photo Rejuvenation and Collagen Induction Therapy to help achieve your desired results.

A Synergistic Brightening System…
Drawing on the latest scientific research, the Ultra Brightening System uses a synergistic blend of ingredients to target surface hyperpigmentation in 5 different ways.  Highly effective plant-derived melanin inhibitors have been tested and proven to be effective in fading the appearance of hyperpigmentation by disrupting production and activity of the enzyme tyrosinase — the main enzyme within melanin cells responsible for the production of pigment and our arch nemesis in hyperpigmentation.  So, let’s meet the Inhibitors:

Melissa officinalis

Native to the Mediterranean region, Melissa officinalis is a member of the mint family and is a potent melanin inhibitor which acts to inhibit tyrosinase within melanin cells so melanin production is reduced. Melissa officinalis is a botanical powerhouse

Oxyresveratrol (extract of Artocarpus)

Oxyresveratrol, found in plants such as white mulberry and Artocarpus, or Monkey Jack, is another potent melanin inhibitor and antioxidant with its depigmenting effect working on the inhibition of tyrosinase activity and melanin production.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) has been shown to be an effective skin brightening agent that works by inhibiting melanin transfer to cells in the epidermis, reducing the appearance of uneven skin tone and texture.

Bearberry Extract

Also known as Uva Ursi, this botanical extract is rich in natural Arbutin (a tyrosinase inhibitor) and is well known for its skin brightening properties. A naturally derived melanin inhibitor, Bearberry helps to brighten skin and to protect against long-term damage from oxidative stress. Bearberry is shown to have skin-lightening properties

Now, let’s meet the Exfoliants:

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – Lactic Acid and Citric Acid

Causing dead cells of the epidermis to loosen and slough off, increasing epidermal turnover, water-soluble Alpha Hydroxy Acids work by breaking down the protein bonds between dead and living skin cells.

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) – Salicylic Acid

Being oil-soluble, Beta Hydroxy Acid has the ability to act on the surface of the skin. Working on accumulated cells within oil glands in the skin, which can build up and clog pores, it also has anti-irritant and anti-bacterial properties.

Methyl Jasmonate

Shown to promote skin shedding and epidermal renewal, Methyl Jasmonate is useful both as a booster and an alternative ingredient when skin sensitivity is a concern.

Caring For Winter Skin

As winter sets in, the colder weather can wreak havoc on skin, both on the face and body. It gets dry, flaky and can sometimes even crack, which can be painful or itchy. With months to go until the spring thaw, it’s time to take a solid look at our skin-care regimens and fine-tune as needed.

Exfoliate Without Overdoing It

It’s no surprise that winter can wreak havoc on a glowing complexion, and while using peels or glycolic acid serums may seem like a quick fix to revive dull skin, Overdoing it actually can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to red, blotchy, stinging skin. Instead, aim to gently exfoliate no more than twice a week to avoid unnecessary inflammation and any disturbance in the surface microbiome.  The perfect solution to exfoliate with this winter is Ultra Dual Microfoliant. This multi-tasking formula is designed to effectively remove surface residue and impurities while imparting absorbable pure Vitamin C to the skin epidermis to provide maximum benefits. Leaves the skin looking visibly refined, smooth, polished and more luminous in appearance. Synthetic fragrance-free.

Layer Your Skin Care

When it comes to boosting hydration for winter try a two-step layering technique: serum, then moisturizer. Highly concentrated serums are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin, fast-tracking ingredients like peptides and antioxidants, while creams seal in the moisture.  If your skin is already showing signs of dehydration this combination can give real visible results quickly. Book a Skin Journey Consultation today and see which serum and moisturiser would work best for your skin.

Use Sunscreen Year-Round

While SPF may be an integral step in your routine during the warmer months, it’s just as vital to continue wearing a layer of protection well past summer. UV rays are present all year round, UVA rays, in particular, are the ones that do all of the damage when it comes to premature ageing.  Coola’s Mineral Sport SPF 30 Citrus Mimosa Moisturiser is a multi-tasking miracle that protects your skin while also helping boost its own natural defences against the sun. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive, this water-resistant, non-greasy cream infuses skin with antioxidants, vitamins, and hydrating ingredients to keep it soft, smooth, and shielded.

What Goes In Still Affects the Skin

When it’s colder outside and we are stuck indoors we might tend binge on comfort foods, sweets and alcohol, while also neglecting to drink as much water as we should. Take note that increased amounts of sugar can take a toll on the complexion and even cause long-term glycation which is when sugar molecules bind to the collagen and elastic fibres in the skin. Triggering free radicals, the process can lead to breakouts or rosacea. Not feeling hot or thirsty can lead us to neglect our water intake, be sure to get your recommended amount in each day and even boost it a bit to help with dehydration. Alcohol can also contribute to dehydration so be sure to up the water intake as you imbibe. If you’re going to drink choose red wine. It’s lower in sugar and has resveratrol, which is anti-ageing. We’ll toast, in moderation, to that.
